Year 9 Information
Contacting the School
You can email the school; your message will be forwarded to the relevant member of staff. Your child’s form tutor should usually be the first point of contact if there is a problem.
Homework
Year 9 students are expected to spend between 8 and 10 hours a week doing homework. Their homework timetable will tell you when it is set .We ask that you check and sign their homework diary every week. It is essential that in year 9 students continue to develop good study habits in preparation for their GCSE courses, some of which will start before the end of Year 9.
Exams
Year 9 exams are listed in the calendar and they take place in February before half term. The students revise in class as well as at home. The results of these exams can help students and staff decide on the most suitable GCSE courses in Key Stage 4.
Progress Reports
You will get a Grade Sheet every term. This gives your child’s current National Curriculum level in each subject and their Key Stage 3 target grade. There will also be a grade for effort. You will receive a full written report on your child’s progress in March, just before Parents’ Evening and before GCSE option choices are made.
Parents’ Evening
This is will be held in March and all parents are expected to attend with their child. At this meeting Mr. Cornell will speak to parents about option choices and there will be members of the Careers Service available.
PSHE Programme
As part of their ongoing PSHE programme, students will cover topics such as drug awareness, managing feelings and relationships. They will have a talk from a local magistrate, which also forms part of their Citizenship programme. Most of tutorial time in the spring term is taken up with preparation for option choices. They will have talks from staff and students on the subjects available and will also be guided by their individual subject teachers. A detailed booklet about the option process will be issued to parents during the spring term.
Clubs and Activities
There are plenty of activities and clubs, both at lunchtime and after school, for your child to become involved in. Please see the school website for details of these or ask for a list. We hope your child will try the clubs and activities and enjoy them to get the most out of their time at school. In later years, universities will be keen to hear about your child’s involvement with school life.
School Productions and Concerts
The Junior production usually takes place at the end of the school year and all students in Years 7-9 are encouraged to audition. If your child is successful, and gets a part, they should understand that they must attend all rehearsals when required. There will be at least one all-day rehearsal on a Sunday. There are several concerts during the school year in which the students can perform.
School Trips
There are a large number of trips in the school year and these are listed on the school calendar. Most of these are subject based such as day trips to the Black Country Museum and the battlefields of the Ypres Salient.
Sports Day
This is held in the summer term at Thames Valley Athletic Centre (TVAC).
Guardian Angels
In October, Year 13 organise a day to thank the teachers. The whole school joins in and it is customary for the girls to come into school with bunches in their hair and to ask the boys for their school ties for the day.
PTA
The school has an active and hard working PTA and the major fundraising events of the year are: The Autumn Ball, the Christmas Fete, the Quiz Night (March), the Summer Fete (May) and the Golf Day (May/June).
