Year 8 Information
Contacting the School
You may email the school and your message will be forwarded to the relevant member of staff. Your child’s form tutor should usually be the first point of contact if there is a problem.
Homework
The homework set for Year 8 is not unduly onerous but students must be organised and hand it in on the right day. They are given a homework timetable so that they know what homework to expect. We ask that you check that their homework is done and sign their homework diary each week.
Exams
Year 8 exams are listed in the calendar and they take place in May before half term. The students revise in class as well as at home.
Parents’ Evening
This is held in January and all parents are expected to attend with their child.
Progress Reports
You will get a Grade Sheet every term giving your child’s current National Curriculum level in each subject and a grade for effort. You will receive a full written report on your child’s progress at the beginning of July.
PSHE Programme
As part of their ongoing PSHE programme, students will cover topics such as their responsibilities, who and what might influence them and issues involved with the mis-use of alcohol. They will begin their careers’ education through the ‘Real Game’ which gives them an excellent insight into the world of work.
Citizenship
In year 8 citizenship education is delivered across the curriculum and through specific citizenship days.
Clubs and Activities
There are plenty of activities and clubs, both at lunchtime and after school, for your child to become involved in. Please see the school website for details of these or ask for a list. We hope your child will try the clubs and activities and enjoy them to get the most out of their time at school. In later years, universities will be keen to hear about your child’s involvement with school life.
School Productions and Concerts
The Junior production usually takes place at the end of the school year and all students in years 7-9 are encouraged to audition. If your child is successful and gets a part, they should understand that they must attend all rehearsals when required. There will be at least one all-day rehearsal on a Sunday. There are several concerts during the school year in which the students can perform.
School Trips
There are several trips in the school year and these are listed on the school calendar.They include some residential trips: an optional French
Homestay visit for students studying French, a German exchange for those studying German and a 3 day Activities Trip which is open to all students in Year 8. This is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and try new activities.
Sports Day
This is held in the summer term at Thames Valley Athletic Centre (TVAC).
Guardian Angels
In October, Year 13 organise a day to thank the teachers. The whole school joins in and it is customary for the girls to come into school with bunches in their hair and to ask the boys for their school ties for the day.
PTA
The school has an active and hard working PTA and the major fundraising events of the year are: The Autumn Ball, the Christmas Fete, the Quiz Night(March), the Summer Fete (May) and the Golf Day (May/June).
